On Sunday, July 27, We Hub held a community session in partnership with the newly formed Bristol Parents and Carers Association. The purpose of the event was to provide a space for local parents and carers to come together and discuss key challenges affecting children and young people in the community.
We were joined by special guest Samira Hussein, a solicitor specialising in criminal and regulatory law. Samira shared valuable insights from her professional experience working within the legal system, particularly in cases involving young people and families. She addressed the legal implications of school exclusions, the early signs of youth involvement in crime, and the importance of early legal awareness for parents and carers. Her contribution provided attendees with a clearer understanding of how legal processes work and the steps families can take to seek support or intervene early when issues arise.
Topics Covered:
- School Exclusions: The session looked at the growing concerns around exclusions and how they may impact students’ future outcomes.
- Crime Prevention: Participants discussed the potential consequences of early disengagement from school and community life, and how to work together to support young people at risk.
- Social Media Risks: There was also a focus on how social media can influence behaviour, including the risks of online grooming, peer pressure, and exposure to harmful content.
The event was open to the public, and attendance included parents, carers, and community workers. Light refreshments (tea, coffee, and biscuits) were provided.
Purpose:
The event aimed to:
- Encourage open dialogue between carers and community members
- Identify ways to support families facing school-related or behavioural challenges
- Lay the groundwork for future collaboration between We Hub and the Bristol Parents and Carers Association
Follow-Up:
We Hub plans to continue hosting similar events to strengthen community understanding of education, justice, and youth safety. Future sessions may include legal advice clinics, parenting support groups, and awareness workshops.
