The Rise Programme
The Rise Programme is a dedicated initiative designed to support young people aged 10-25 who have come into contact with the criminal legal system in Bristol, primarily from racially minoritised communities. The programme provides a structured and supportive alternative to conventional punitive measures, guiding participants towards positive life choices and helping them navigate challenges in a safe, nurturing environment. By offering a comprehensive mix of one-on-one mentoring, group workshops, goal-oriented coaching, and engaging activities, the programme seeks to create pathways away from crime while building resilience, self-confidence, and practical life skills.
Participants in the Rise Programme receive tailored support. This includes intensive mentoring sessions focused on creating safe spaces for reflection, strengthening decision-making skills, building self-esteem, and developing strategies to manage conflict. Group workshops provide culturally responsive education on essential life skills such as financial literacy, personal growth, and harm reduction. Participants are also encouraged to engage in a range of positive activities designed to enhance both physical and emotional wellbeing, which may include therapeutic sessions and recreational pursuits. Life coaching is a key element of the programme, helping young people set achievable goals, create personal development plans, and explore education, training, and career opportunities, fostering a vision for a fulfilling life beyond offending. The BPACA Programme
The Bristol Parent and Carers Association (BPACA) is a community-led initiative designed to empower families and strengthen the protective environment around young people, particularly in areas where children and teenagers face heightened risks of criminal exploitation, gang involvement, and other harmful influences. The programme was developed in response to the concerns voiced by local parents and carers who sought practical guidance, support, and knowledge to help them identify early warning signs of risky behaviours and intervene effectively before issues escalate. BPACA focuses on equipping families with the tools to recognise, prevent, and address situations that could lead young people towards involvement in crime or antisocial activity.
At the heart of BPACA is the understanding that families play a critical role in fostering resilience, self-confidence, and positive decision-making in young people. The programme delivers accessible, culturally sensitive support, helping parents and carers navigate complex challenges, from substance misuse and peer pressure to exposure to gang activity or online risks. BPACA promotes awareness of early warning signs, practical strategies to respond safely, and ways to maintain open, non-judgmental communication with children and teenagers. By providing this guidance, the programme seeks to create a safer, more informed, and more confident parent and carer community, fostering environments where young people can thrive and make positive choices.
The programme provides a structured approach to family support, combining educational sessions, interactive workshops, and access to experienced mentors and practitioners who understand the local community dynamics. Families are encouraged to participate in group discussions, peer support networks, and community events, all designed to build knowledge, confidence, and practical skills. These sessions explore topics such as managing challenging behaviours, understanding legal and social frameworks, conflict resolution, and supporting young people through transitions in education and social environments. By actively engaging parents and carers, BPACA strengthens community cohesion and creates collective accountability, empowering families to be proactive in protecting and guiding young people.
Eligibility:
- Parents or carers of children aged 8-18
- Residents of Bristol or the surrounding South West area
- Willing to participate in programme sessions and community activities
Programme provisions:
- Workshops and training sessions on early warning signs, risk factors, and intervention strategies
- One-on-one guidance and mentoring for families navigating specific challenges
- Support networks connecting parents and carers for shared learning and advice
- Access to expert advice from practitioners in youth safeguarding, education, and community safety
- Guidance on building safe spaces and nurturing environments at home and in the community
BPACA represents a holistic, preventative approach to community safety, recognising that informed and empowered families are a critical line of defence against crime and exploitation. Through education, mentoring, and community engagement, the programme fosters stronger relationships between families, schools, and local services, helping ensure young people have the support and opportunities they need to avoid harmful pathways. Families are equipped not just to respond to challenges, but to actively nurture resilience, confidence, and healthy decision-making in their children.
